The Battle of Vertières (in Haitian Creole Batay Vètyè)
The last major battle of the Haitian Revolution was fought in November 1803 between the Haitian army, and Napoleon's French expeditionary forces. Vertières is situated just south of Cap-Français
General Rochambeau sent Captain Duveyrier to negotiate the French surrender and was given ten days to embark the remainder of his army and leave Saint-Domingue. The battle occurred less than two months before Dessalines' proclamation of the independent Republic of Haiti on January 1, 1804.
