Chapter 4
The Military and the Wedding

At the conclusion of the traditional formalities, Jean asked for all in attendance’s attention and locked eyes with Marie from across the room. She was dressed in a dark violet dress cut to accentuate her broad shoulders and exposing her beautiful neck. The dress hugged her torso, highlighting her slim body with her breasts slightly mounded at the top. Below the waist it puffed outward before gracefully falling to the ground. To Jean, she was the most beautiful creature on earth.

 Marie was surprised by Jean’s commandment, and wondered what he had to say which had not already been said by the parade of family members before him. She had to admit being the only one present in uniform not only enhanced his manly appearance but added a touch of pageantry from the bright red, white and blue colors of France. He was the most gorgeous thing she had ever laid her eyes upon.

 Jean began to speak. He professed in no uncertain terms his unwavering and eternal love for Marie. His speech extolled her virtues in a loving ballad, enrapturing all.

 Marie was shocked, but could not take her eyes off of him. He slowly approached her as he continued to speak. Her heart stopped and she felt the air escape her lungs as she realized what was happening. She saw her mother in tears somewhere beyond him, catching her nod of endorsement and seeing her father join her before returning her full attention to Jean. 

 Jean-Phillippe and Jeanne Bayard joined the Jasmines to stand together in solidarity. The world began to move in slow motion as Jean got down on one knee. A gasp and silence gripped the crowd. Jean pulled his great grandmother's engagement ring from his pocket and spoke once more.

 “Marie Jasmine, I offer you my great grandmother’s engagement ring, a cherished symbol of the Bayard family, and ask of thee: will you forever make me the happiest man alive and marry me?” 

 Marie modeled a shocked expression on her face before blurting out, “Yes…Yes, yes!’'
