Chapter 5
A New Baby and A New Business

“Good morning Jean. How are you this splendid day?” shouted Gerard.

“Couldn’t be better,” Jean replied. “And you?”

“Wanting for more of your beans! I have already sold half the shipment which will be headed out to coffee connoisseurs in Paris,” he replied.  “When can I get more?”

“I will send you a message somehow. Give me your address for forwarding.”

“It is on this bank draft—please verify that it is acceptable and the amount is exactly as we had agreed.” Gerard said.

Jean had calculated the amount and presented Gerard his invoice.

“All in order, Gerard. Have your men come take your cargo.” replied Jean. “It has been a pleasure doing business with you!”

Within a half hour, the sacks were unloaded and all business concluded. At 10:30, a carriage pulled up to the dock. Marie stepped out, dressed in a light blue peasant dress and broad rimmed hat. She was handed a basket by the carriage driver's assistant. Thanking the duo, she walked up to the sloop.

“How’s it going here?” she asked.

“Fabulously well my love. Business is concluded, and with you here, we can get under way.” Jean said, holding his hand out. Marie handed him the basket—which was quite heavy—before offering her hand.

The basket turned out to be filled with food not only for herself and Jean, but the crew. It included pate, chicken, breads, cheeses, and an assortment of wine. The Captain and his men were delighted to have been considered.

They set out to sea with a feeling of relief, accomplishment, and leisure. The ocean was calm and a deep blue under the bright October sun which warmed the crisp breeze. As the ship exited the harbor, they looked back for one final sight of Cap-Français.

“I like it here” said Marie.

Jean’s heart fluttered with happiness. One day, he knew Cap-Français would become their home.
