Chapter 7
Chasing Pirates
“One click. They are within range!” cried the sailor.
“Remain on course to head straight towards her bow.” commanded Jean. “She cannot fire at us on a collision course.”
“Three hundred meters, sir” yelled the sailor.
“Begin your turn ten degrees to port now!” yelled Jean to the captain. “Let’s hope her starboard cannons are not yet loaded as they were expecting us from the other side.”
The Rose began her turn to port.
“She sees our turn and is attempting a starboard turn to ram” said the sailor.
“She’s turning her nose right to us. Starboard twenty degrees now!” yelled Jean. “Hold your fire until you are certain you can hit her masts. Four cannons on each!”
“One hundred meters!”
“Commander, be ready to fire on sight!” Jean called to Biassou. He barely made out a hint of a smile come across his friend’s face before turning his attention back to the incoming ship.
The Rose’s position gave the artillery perfect alignment to aim as both ships came within ten meters of each other. Jean was now close enough to make out the name: Night Witch. Frith’s flagship boasted 20 guns, just like the Rose. The Chasseurs opened fire, many of them finding their targets. The explosions emanating from the Rose’s cannons instantly destroyed two of the masts, causing the entire mechanism to come crashing onto her deck.
