She was the daughter of a white French Colonel and a black socialite mother.
She was affectionately known as “Joute”, and was the mistress of President Alexandre Pétion from 1807 to 1818 and helped place Petion’s successor - Jean-Pierre Boiyey - to become the next president from 1818 to 1843, and became his mistress.
Due to her impact, she was nicknamed "The President of Two Presidents." She co-ruled Haiti for 37 years, perhaps the longest time span of any woman and the first to open orphanages in the country.
She was smart, cunning, beautiful, and resourceful.
