Triumph To Tragedy

By Daniel J.D. Bayard
HISTORICAL, THRILLING, AWARD-WINNING

TRIUMPH TO TRAGEDY's three-book trilogy is the continuing chronicle of the first (and only!) successful slave revolution in the world, ultimately spawning the Republic of Haiti. It's an ongoing battle that's still being fought to this day.

The story is hardly a fairy tale, as the factual events are all too true. TRIUMPH TO TRAGEDY recounts the circumstances and individuals purposely ignored by world history texts for far too long. The books are brimming with romance, intrigue, war, and political betrayal, all three volumes are seductive page-turners that entertain and educate readers, countrymen, and history buffs alike.

Book One: Intrigue-Romance-Betrayal And The Haitian Revolution: 1771 - 1793

In 1771, young Jean Baptiste returned from his university in Paris to his home on the Caribbean island of St. Domingue—now the Republic of Haiti. He needed to determine if life on a plantation suited him. He soon met the beautiful Marie Jasmine, and they fell in love and began an exciting life together in the French colony.

This is the untold story of this era, which has long been absent from high school history books and university lecture halls. It is the story of the Haitian people; and a triumphant revolution too far ahead of its time to avoid a tragic end.

Eighty years before emancipation in America, a slave-led revolt defeated the French, British, and Spanish militaries, forming a new nation from the burning embers of the richest colony in the world.

Packed with romance, war, drama, intrigue, political betrayal, and pirates—this historical non-fiction novel reveals a heretofore unknown period of history in the form of an irresistible page-turner.

Learn how Haitian Generals, soldiers, businessmen, and property owners without formal military or political training, outmaneuvered the combined might of the most powerful armies of the world and formed the first Black slave republic in history.

Book Two: The Rise of Toussaint Louverture: 1793 - 1799

Toussaint Louverture is a Haitian hero—considered a founding father of the nation. He was of royal blood, the first-born son of a West African prince.

Toussaint was nearly 50 years old at the start of the slave rebellion of 1791 and initially allied with the Spaniards of neighboring Santo Domingo. He demonstrated strength in military leadership, strategy, logistical operations, and battle—going on to train a lethal fighting force and winning many battles against the French Colonial Army.

Toussaint switched his allegiance when France officially abolished slavery in 1794 and went on to defeat the Spanish Colonial Army on its behalf. He gradually established military and political control over the island and used his influence to assert dominance over his rivals.

Follow the adventures of Toussaint Louverture as he builds a coalition with historical figures, such as Henry Christophe, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, and others to consolidate power and rule a colony trapped in the dichotomy of history through the Triumphs and eventual Tragedies of their time.

Book Three: The Fall of Toussaint and Rise of Dessalines: 1799 - 1804

Napoleon Bonaparte thought he could tame the French colony of Saint Domingue in just three easy months to restore slavery, dissolve the multi-racial army, and restore Saint Domingue to the wealthiest plantation economy in the world.

The Saint Domingue expedition required over 100 vessels and 80,000 people. In less than two years, France lost the colony along with over 50,000 troops, including 20 competent generals, and treasury enough to force the sale of Louisiana to the United States.

Book Three of TRIUMPH TO TRAGEDY continues the riveting saga of Books One and Two and introduces Jean-Jacques Dessalines ... the Haitian Civil War ... the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte ...and the birth of the Haitian nation in 1804.

Brimming with romance, intrigue, war, and political betrayal, all three volumes are seductive page-turners that entertain and educate readers, countrymen, and history buffs alike. The story is hardly a fairy tale, as the factual events are all too true, recounting the circumstances and individuals purposely ignored or rewritten by world history texts for far too long.

Book Four: The Clash of Petion and Christophe: 1799 - 1804

1804 began a new era for the new country of Ayiti. After 13 years of constant turmoil, the island had finally won its freedom. Jean-Jacques Dessalines had taken up the mantle as the Commander of the Revolutionary Army after the death of his mentor, Toussaint Louverture. He masterfully assembled a mighty army of 40,000 men and women to defeat Napoleon’s French army and declared Ayiti a free nation. Dessalines was joined by two other notable generals, also considered as founding fathers; Henry Christophe and Alexandre Pétion.

The Bayard family deftly navigated their personal lives, business endeavors, and the ever-shifting political landscape as the years passed. In a world where death and destruction loomed at every turn, they survived and thrived, determined to carve out their success despite all odds. Their days were filled with calculated risks and strategic moves, each one bringing them closer to their ultimate goal of prosperity in a time of chaos.

Book Four opens on New Year's Day of 1804, in three different cities - Cap Français, Gonaïves, and Port Républicain - where our main characters and principal protagonists begin to navigate their way through the aftermath of liberation, not knowing that their paths would soon cross at dangerous intersections. As they strive to establish stability and peace in their homeland, they will soon realize that this may be even more challenging than fighting for their freedom.
